BEST committee express concerns about pending gratuity payment

As per reports, the pending amount has now increased and officials are expecting support from the civic body. While BMC has approved the funds, the clearance process for the same has been pending for over 3 months.

Committee Members of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) recently held a panel meeting to discuss the matters regarding the pending gratuity which is supposed to be paid to retired employees.

The discussion was held on Friday, June 25, 2021, where officials mentioned that the sum has increased to INR 503 crore, from the previously reported INR 405 crore. A report regarding the same was published in the Times of India.

Sharing more information, Sunil Ganacharya, a senior committee member said that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was expected the amount after a resolution was raised regarding the same. However, post the approval, there has been no change the file status as it has been in the clearance for over three months now.

Moreover, family members of the deceased staffers, who had retired from the service, have been waiting for the pending dues and this issue needs to be solved at the earliest. Besides this, a sum of INR 20 crore will have to be paid as interest as well, as a few of these retired members have moved the court against the department. Some also complained that the staffers have not received the gratuity since  2018. Addressing these matters officials confirmed that all the dues will have to be cleared and the process is underway. 

Discussions will soon be held with the Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal and solution will be sought for the same. 

On the other hand, employees from BEST also celebrated the retirement of MUTP buses which had become the face of Mumbai’s public transport. Reports state that these was procured with a World Bank loan in 2005. To celebrate the same,  BEST employees cut cake for the bus which was on its last ride to Mulund.
