In a heart-warming scenario, just as Mumbai’s MUTP bus retired on Saturday, June 12, several BEST employees were witnessed cutting cake for the bus on its last ride to Mulund.

The MUTP bus that had become the face of Mumbai’s public transport was procured with a World Bank loan in 2005 under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project-2, and the 644 buses had made an entry along with the purple local trains, which were introduced for the first time under the same project.

According to reports, the bus retires as its life of 15 years completes this month. The buses have unfortunately been scheduled for scrap, though bus aficionados have been suggesting that at least one of them needs to be saved for the museum.

The Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP), was a project formulated by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) in order to bring about improvement in the traffic and transport situation in the Mumbai metropolitan region with the assistance of the World Bank.

On the other hand, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is ready to take over the operation and maintenance of Mumbai Metro’s Line One. Moreover, MMRDA has further approved the appointment of a consultant to carry forward the due work before a takeover.

This 11.5 km line is Mumbai’s first Metro line and was built under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model and commissioned in 2014.

Furthermore, the MMRDA had earlier taken over the operations of Metro One. This came after Reliance Infrastructure, which runs the corridor had decided to offload its stake in the project. MMRDA earlier had a 26 per cent stake in the special purpose vehicle whereas Anil Ambani owned Reliance Infrastructure held 69 per cent.
