The number of citizens testing positive for the coronavirus, working as employees of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), has considerably declined as the cases of coronavirus witness a decline in Mumbai.

According to sources, in the last three days, no BEST employee has tested positive for COVID-19. So far, 3,474 employees have tested positive for COVID-19 whereas 3,350 employees have recovered. At the moment, the number of people undergoing treatment for COVID-19 is 11 whereas two of them are on life support.

Meanwhile, 95 employees have succumbed to the disease so far. Even though 2,900 employees were affected by the deadly disease in the first wave, in the second wave, 574 people were affected by the coronavirus.

On the other hand, in recent developments, the fleet of BEST is touted to include 400 CNG non-air-conditioned single-decker buses and about 100 buses which are to arrive by September 2021.

According to sources, BEST has decided to increase the number of buses in its fleet to 6,000 in the next 2-3 years. At the moment, BEST has 3,323 buses in its fleet, including 1,100 on lease. Moreover, the proposal to include new buses was approved in January 2021. The buses will be leased from one company at a rate of INR 89.91 per km for 10 years. For this, BEST will spend INR 1,942 crore for 10 years.
