A new, efficient, and affordable mode of transportation—air (pod) taxis—will soon be introduced in Thane city. In line with this, the Thane Municipal Corporation has granted the necessary permissions and approvals for surveys to the concerned company, Nutron EV Mobility Ltd. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik expressed confidence that the project will soon be operational.
Thane’s population has crossed 2.5 million, making it one of the fastest-growing cities in the state. With increasing urban traffic, road congestion is expected to worsen in the coming years. The air (pod) taxi system is seen as a promising solution to ease road traffic and provide an alternative transport mode. Simultaneously, efforts are underway—led by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde—to expand the metro network in Thane. The metro line from Wadala to Gaimukh is scheduled to begin next year. The proposed air taxi system will complement this metro route, especially between Kapurbawdi and Gaimukh, enhancing overall connectivity.
Minister Sarnaik stated that their goal is to provide a safe, convenient, and futuristic travel option for city residents by launching air taxis as an alternative to road transport.

Inspired by PM Modi’s vision and guided by Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, a pilot air taxi project is currently underway in Vadodara, Gujarat. Acting on Deputy CM Shinde’s directive to explore similar projects in Thane and Mira-Bhayander, Minister Sarnaik visited the Vadodara project site. Following this visit, he took the initiative to bring a similar pilot project to Thane and Mira-Bhayander.
Nutron EV Mobility Ltd. will carry out the initial survey for implementing air taxis in Thane. The proposed pilot will be conducted on the 40-meter road near Vihang Hills at Bhayander Pada on Ghodbunder Road. Minister Sarnaik emphasised that this project will not require any financial contribution from the municipal corporation or the state government. He added that this initiative would play a vital role in shaping the future of urban transportation in Thane.
