Mumbai division of Central Railways (CR) is all set to get a major upgrade, as the city is getting a brand new railway station named Digha early next year.

This new station is a part of the Airoli-Kalwa Elevated Corridor, which is an ambitious project aimed at easing travel for the commuters in the city.

The new station has been constructed at a cost of ₹200 crores. Also, it is one of the key components of the ₹476 crore INR Airoli-Kalwa Elevated Corridor.

The corridor is being constructed by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP)-3, and once it's completed, it will provide seamless connectivity between Kalyan-Dombivli and Navi Mumbai.

The new station in Digha, which will be opened as a part of the first phase of the 8km-long Airoli-Kalwa elevated rail corridor, is almost ready; however, only some minor works are pending, said MRVC officials. These works include drain connections, lighting, and other peripheral works, which are expected to be completed soon.

This new station will be a welcoming addition to the city's railway infrastructure and will provide much-needed relief to the commuters who are grappling with the growing traffic woes in the city.

As this will be a huge relief for commuters who have to change local trains at Thane to reach the trans-harbour line. The Airoli-Kalwa Elevated Corridor will make it possible for these commuters to reach the trans-harbour line directly.

The new Digha station, which is a significant milestone in the project, will come after Airoli railway station.

The Airoli-Kalwa link project will be a game-changer for the city and citizens, as it will provide seamless connectivity to the trans-harbour line and will benefit lakhs of commuters.

On the other hand, the project's second phase will deal with site acquisition, home relocation of affected household, and house repair. Of the 2.55 hectares of land in Kalwa and Airoli, 1.95 hectares have been acquired, and the acquisition of the balance of 0.60 hectares is in an advanced stage. There are around 1,080 families who need to be rehabilitated, and the railway officials are making sure that the process is carried out in a smooth and seamless manner.

There is also buzz that during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mumbai on February 10, he may inaugurate the Digha railway station. He is also expected to visit the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) station to get a first-hand view of the new railway infrastructure in the city.
