Amidst the lockdown-like restrictions in Mumbai, even though only essential service personnel are allowed to travel on the suburban trains, ordinary commuters who are out for work are still trying to travel by train.

In the two days between April 23 and 24, more than 1,300 passengers were caught, a senior Central Railway official said. After the relaxations in norms post the outbreak of the coronavirus last year, 95 per cent of local ferries were running on the Central and Western Railway suburban routes.

However, with the second wave of the coronavirus hitting the country, and a subsequent rise in the number of cases, the general public has been asked to work from home, and not use the Mumbai locals.

This decision was implemented on Thursday, April 22, where only essential and medical personnel, passengers going for medical treatment and the central and state governments employees were allowed to travel on the suburban railway routes. Strict enforcement began on Friday, April 23, 2021, however, most of the stations continued with 2 to 3 entrances each on the east and west sides. Public ticketing services and mobile ticketing services along with ATVM were also shut down so that the passengers do not flout the rules by travelling.

Meanwhile, a large section of the population regularly commutes for work to Mumbai from places like Karjat, Khopoli, Kasara, Ambernath, Badlapur, Kalyan, Dombivli. Even though private offices are instructed to work from home, many are still called to the office.
