The drivers of private bus operator SMT, also known as Daga Group, have gone on strike for salary hike. As they initiated a sudden strike, which instigated closure of Mulund and Ghatkopar bus depots, the smooth operations of Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus services.

On Tuesday morning, August 2, the contractual employees of the BEST decided to go on an indefinite strike. Officegoers and even other passengers waiting for the bus are went into frenzy due to long queues before the arrival of the bus during peak hours of commute.

The BEST undertaking, responsible for public bus services in the metropolis, has engaged the services of several contractors, including the Daga Group, following a wet lease model. Under this arrangement, private operators own the buses and also take on the responsibility of maintenance, fuel, and driver salaries.

Their initial demands were salary hike, better facilities, no overtime. For these demands, Pragya Khajurkar and her family are on hunger strike at Azad Maidan. Even the drivers and other employees have joined them.
