Despite BEST buses running in losses, four 31-seater electric buses will run on streets from November 10 which costs INR 1 crore each. The inauguration will take place at Wadala bus depot on Friday with the presence of Yuva Sena chief Aaditya Thackeray.

In order to curb air pollution, BEST decided to bring in electric buses which do not run on fuel but only on charging. Once the bus gets charged, it can run at 200 km per hour. However, the only charging point is at Colaba bus depot. In an initial phase, six electric buses will be introduced.

BEST buses will run on these routes

  • Route number 138 (Backbay Depot-CSMT)
  • Special-2 (CSMT-World Trade Center, in the morning hours)
  • 112 (Gateway of India-Churchgate Station, in the evening hours)
  • Special 9 (Ahilyabai Holkar Chowk via NCPA)
  • 100 (Ahilyabai Holkar Chowk via Free Press Journal)
  • Fort Ferry-1 (CSMT via RBI/NCPA)
  • Fort Ferry-2 (CSMT via Churchgate/NCPA).

Mumbai Live would like to raise few questions about BEST’s move

  • What will BEST do if any electric bus breaks down on the roads amidst the traffic?
  • When BEST is already reeling in losses, was buying electric buses a wise decision?
  • Why is there only one charging point across the city?
