Shiv Sena minister Sachin Padwal had put forth the proposal of converting scrap Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) buses in mobile toilets and the proposal was approved by the Legislative Assembly.
Shiv Sena's demand has been approved by the Legislative Assembly and Mobile toilets will be made available to Mumbai on highways, small roads, and crowded places and won’t prove to be an inconvenience to citizens-passengers.
In Mumbai, due to the obstacles of mono and metro railway excavation, roads, bridge work and hawkers, there is huge traffic congestion. Similarly, there is tremendous inconvenience for senior citizens and diabetic patients due to lack of public toilets on the Western and Eastern Express Highways. The demand for the construction of mobile toilets in BEST buses for their convenience was sought.
Notably, Shiv Sena corporator Sachin Padwal had put forward a proposal that the scrap BEST buses must be converted into mobile toilets. He had proposed that since the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) guidelines forbid from constructing toilets on footpaths, the scrap buses can be used as mobile toilets. He had further explained that more than 113 buses are rotting away and are of no use since the damaged bus parts are also unavailable and thus, they cannot be repaired. Therefore, Padwal had proposed to establish the moving toilets on the route.
Meanwhile, opposition party leader Ravi Raja had opposed the proposal. He requested the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to set up toilets near the Metro Rail and not to use the old buses for the toilets.
Apart from this, BEST committee chairman Ashish Chemburkar has clarified that there will be no logo and color in the buses when the toilets are being built.
