The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) is planning to buy 225 buses including 100 air-conditioned minibuses, 100 non-AC minibuses and 25 midibuses on a lease for seven years which will come at a contractual value of ₹ 305.95 Crore. For further approval, the undertaking has moved this proposal to the BEST committee.
According to BEST sources, they wanted to hire mini and midi buses as they believe that the smaller buses will move faster on narrow and congested roads as compared to regular buses. During the period of seven years, the contractors will provide the drivers and will also maintain the vehicles.
As per the proposal, the lowest bidder will supply mini AC buses at per kilometer rate between ₹49 to ₹50.45, mini non-AC buses at ₹41 to ₹43.09 and midi buses at ₹45 to ₹47.30.
After failing in two bids, the BEST finalised a bidder who said that the minibuses would run 3,500 kilometres per month and midi buses would run 4,000 kilometres.
