BEST Workers Seek Diwali Bonus After BMC Staffers Get Their Bonuses Approved

Following demands by civic officials to receive a Diwali bonus, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced that it will provide a festive bonus to all staff barring those who are hired on a contractual basis. The civic body said that the bonuses will stretch between INR 2,350 and INR15,500 depending on the employee tier.

With this backdrop, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport or BEST has also sought bonuses on par with BMC employees. 

As per the General Secretary of the BEST UNION, Shashank Rao, BEST staff received around INR 5,100 less than BMC employees in 2019.

It’s worth mentioning that a large bulk of the civic workforce, as well as doctors and police personnel, have been at the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic in Mumbai and across the State. 

Recently, a police organization demanded the government to provide bonuses to the male and female police officers for Diwali. However, there’s currently no clarity from the State on this front.
