The Bombay High Court slammed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and railways on Friday for razing Hancock Bridge without providing any alternative means to pedestrians and school children.

During a hearing, the HC mentioned that pedestrians and school children are suffering as neither railways nor the BMC bothered to re-construct the Hancock bridge.

The HC has given an ultimatum to the railways by asking them to come up with a detailed report on 'how to re-build Hancock Bridge' and submit it by Wednesday.

Don't count problems, come up with solutions

RTI activist Kamlakar Shenoy had filed a petition asking to re-build the Hancock bridge, as its absence was causing inconvenience to pedestrians and school children.

Shenoy alleged that the HC had asked railways to take help from military to construct the demolished bridge, but, Shenoy complained that the railways did not follow the order.

HC slammed railway officials and BMC over salary. “If you cannot solve common man’s problem, how can you even claim your salary?”.

About Hancock Bridge

This bridge was located between suburban railway stations Sandhurst Road and Byculla and it was initially built in 1879. Later, in 1923, it was reconstructed and in January 2016, it was completely demolished for another reconstruction. However, yet the bridge has not seen the light of the day.
