The monsoon is expected to arrive on time this year in Mumbai and hence, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the railway department, like every year, needs to complete the pending nullah works to avoid water logging across several areas and the railway tracks in Mumbai.

As per reports, Central and Western Railway officials have informed that over  90 per cent of the pre-monsoon works have been completed. However, the reality seems to be much different from the claims, especially across some areas of Mumbai.

Residents have informed that several huts and small houses have been erected in the railway area in the east of Bandra Terminus. This has been done with the help of local politicians and has eventually led to  unsanitary conditions. Sewage from Khar, Pali Hill, Bandra Yard, Bandra Terminus is carried through this Chamdawadi Nala, and cleaning is needed to prevent the sewage water from overflowing during the monsoon.

Data shared by the team state that out of the 247 km nallas in Mumbai division on Central Railway, 230 km nallas have been cleared. On the other hand, out of the 833 culverts, more than 800 have been cleared. In addition, high capacity water pumps have been installed at the reservoirs and 90% pre-monsoon work in Mumbai section of Western Railway has been completed.

Last year, areas in Dadar and Matunga were flooded due to the monsoon and keeping this in mind, the drainage capacity was increased by repairing the culverts. The work of micro-tunneling in Bandra area is also close to completion. Experts state that the culvert in the railway boundary area meets the culvert in the municipality area and this requires clearing to ensure quick drainage clearance.

The Railways has requested the Municipal Corporation to give priority to the cleaning of Dharavi and Chamdawala Nallas which are the cause of the flood situation in the Mumbai Railway area. The senior officers from the concerned department have been in touch with the officers from the BMC, so that the work within the boundaries between the Railways and the BMC areas do not remain incomplete.

Additionally, the Railway Administration has also said that the officials are working together with the BMC to expedite the work across areas known for water logging during the monsoon.
