Before the Elphinstone stampede — which claimed 23 lives — Indian railways literally ignored the news report that predicted the possible stampede. But, railways and state government have finally realised the vulnerable condition of the infrastructure after an unfortunate stampede.

It was this terrifying incident that made all the politicos, both from the state and central government, to visit the site and in a few days, sensing the public rage, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the bridge would be expanded in no time by the military officials. However, the officials are not able to productively work due to the lack of space on Elphinstone station’s foot-over-bridge (FOB).

Post-Elphinstone stampede, the railways felt the need to expand the bridge for which the ‘Bombay Engineering Group’ of the military had been hired to carry out the work. The Western Railway (WR) has also given a green signal for the blueprint of the construction submitted by the group.

Expansion work to start in December

The railways will be spending approximately INR 10 crore for the expansion project and the work is likely to start by December.
