On Tuesday, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and CM Devendra Fadnavis visited Elphinstone station where 23 were killed in a deadly stampede on September 29, 2017.

Considering the existing weak infrastructure, railways have decided to rope in Indian army who agreed to help in rebuilding the foot overbridge which is expected to complete by January 31, 2018. Along with this, two other bridges will be constructed at Currey Road and Ambivali, respectively.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the army will inspect and assess the bridge and will commence the work from November 5, 2017.

Last three years, I am following up on this matter and now they have decided to rope in military. BJP is playing dirty politics by showing off their power and nothing else," Arvind Sawant, MP, Shiv Sena.

Prior to this, the military has built a replacement Second World War-style Bailey Bridge in just six days when the suspension bridge outside the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium crashed onto a road injuring 27 workers.
