Central Railway to install facial recognition cameras across key stations in Maharashtra

Central Railway (CR) operated stations across Maharashtra, including Mumbai, will soon be equipped with high-tech facial recognition cameras for public safety as well as monitoring, CR said. This new upgrade in infrastructure is also expected to help locate missing people.

For the time being, this will be taken up as a pilot project in stations like Ghatkopar, Manmad as well as Nashik. Central Railway added that it will bring this technology to more stations depending on the success of this initial project.

Expanding further on the technology used, Public Relations Officer for Central Railway, Shivaji Sutar said - “Right now the system is on the survey and experimental level. The system will be installed at Nashik, Manmad and Ghatkopar railway station. The technology is very simple but very useful. The face recognition technology will be installed in all the CCTV cameras at the railway station, on platform, bridges and entry, exit points.”

“Now, at the control room, we will feed data with a wanted criminal record in our system. So, if a person passes through the CCTV cameras, immediately an alert will be sent to the main control room which will be monitored all the time. The other purpose of the technology is crowd management. Once the cameras see crowd stagnant at one place, immediately an alert will be sent and we can send our forces to control the crowd. If all goes well, we will install this technology at various other places as well,” he added.

It’s worth mentioning that surveillance of public stations is not particularly new. However, the newer facial recognition infrastructure will allow the authorities to properly monitor the flow of people as well as snatch miscreants while they’re in the act. This could also provide a huge boost to women’s safety in the city’s stations.
