In a substantial development, metal door detectors have been installed near the entrances in some of the overcrowded stations on the suburban railway system in Mumbai. In order to further provide safety to the commuters, Central Railways has decided to remove 30 metal detectors that are not working.
According to sources, a handheld metal detector is to be introduced in these places. In addition, new CCTV cameras will be installed under the integrated security system. However, although a security guard needs to be deployed near this metal detector, this has been ignored by the railway authorities. Moreover, the closed-door metal detector was also criticized after the 26/11 attack on the CSMT station.
On the other hand, the Central Railways had earlier decided to start Digi locker at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Dadar railway station along with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj terminus in Mumbai. Moreover, the passengers are to avail of the benefits of this Digi locker on a first-come-first-served basis. The locker must first be chosen to hold luggage or valuables. After placing the luggage, the concerned passengers will be given a receipt with a barcode. Scanning this receipt on the scanner on Digi locker to retrieve the goods will open the appropriate locker.
In addition, receipts will be made available online along with online payment. This will alleviate the concern of missing passenger receipts. Meanwhile, this service will be a paid one. According to the non-fair revenue model, this facility will be introduced at the railway station.
