With peak hour rush resuming to normal levels in Mumbai local trains, according to the latest reports, the number of travellers caught without donning face masks on the Central Railways (CR) suburban sections has surged 10 times in a duration of one month.

Based on accounts, in accordance with the data shared on Sunday, January 30, in May 2021, 780 people were fined for not wearing face masks. The numbers, however, fell to 197 in December. But, in January 2022, the numbers surged considerably.

According to reports, nearly 2,043 which is up by 937 per cent of travellers have been fined over INR 4 lakh. Several narratives have quoted Shivaji Sutar, CR chief spokesperson elaborating on how they have seen a big surge in the number of daily booked cases in January wherein they caught nearly 100 passengers every day for not donning face masks.

On the other hand, an official from the Western Railways stated that it reported 844 cases of people not wearing face masks in January on the suburban sections. With this, narratives cited that the aggregate fine imposed was almost INR 1 lakh.

It has been reported that in the financial year 2021-22, more than 15,000 cases of travellers flouting rules were registered and INR 22 lakh in fines were collected on the Western Railways. Moreover, on the CR Main and Harbour lines, nearly 5,000 travellers were caught and INR 10 lakh were realized in fines, claimed accounts.
