Central Railway has set up Business Development Units (BDUs) at regional and divisional levels. The Business Development Unit aggressively markets new proposals and flexible schemes with local farmers, loaders, APMC and individuals and aggregate their demands.

For such initiative, meetings were held with major automobile industries such as Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors and Maruti Udyog regarding the transport of cars, pick-up vans, tractors, jeeps etc.

Central Railway has witnessed a record transport of automobile products in the current financial year. Loading facilities have been developed at Kalamboli in Mumbai Division, Nashik Road in Bhusawal Division, Chinchwad Station in Pune Division, Bale Station in Solapur Division and Ajni Station in Nagpur Division.

In February 2021, the railways loaded 32 rakes, while in the same month last year, in February 2020, 12 rakes were loaded. There is an increase of 166 per cent in February 2021. In the current financial year, from April 2020 to February 2021, 246 racks of automobiles have been loaded, while in the same period last year, from April 2019 to February 2020, 118 rakes have been loaded. This year's loading has increased by 146 per cent. Over the past year, automobiles have been transported to various parts of the country and now for the first time, it has also been exported to Bangladesh.

This initiative of the railways saves carbon footprint along with saving valuable fuel. During the Business Development Unit’s interaction with automobile manufacturers, their suggestions were also welcomed. In this direction, Central Railway has developed prototype coaches for easy loading and carrying of automobile vehicles and has increased the speed of transportation by considering the instructions given by the manufacturers.
