The Central Railways (CR) have decided to draw back its experiment of modifying seating arrangements in the suburban train compartments. The modification that the Railways rolled back was the removal of three seats close to the compartment door in order to bring more space and avail more standing passengers. In 2015, the modification was carried out on a trial basis in light of the increase in commuters falling out of crowded compartments.

However, the modification did not go well with the passengers as most of the trains with the modified design were run on longer routes, i.e. Ambarnath, Karjat, Asangaon and Titwala. Due to this, the commuters displayed their discontent and approached the CR officials regarding the same matter.

The seat modification was done in eight local trains on a pilot basis. It has now been decided to restore to the original seating arrangements, on the basis of passenger feedback received over a period of time,” Sunil Udasi, Chief Public Relations Officer, CR told Hindustan Times.

“It is a wonderful move and it is welcomed by the passengers. Commuters were troubled a lot because of removing the seating arrangements,” said Subash Gupta, president of Rail Yatri Parishad, a passenger association.
