After repeated protests by the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) employees, the BEST Corporation decided to listen to their employees' woes and resolve their issues. Accordingly, on Thursday, September 5, the bus company held a meeting with the BEST Kamgar Sena where the two parties decided to negotiate about the employee demands.
Therefore, it is being expected that all the BEST employees will be receiving an increment of ₹5,000-₹12,000 in their current salary. However, the BEST Sanyukt Kamgar Kruti Samiti (BSKKS) has expressed that the increase is inadequate and therefore, have decided to protest after Ganesh Chaturthi 2019.
Earlier, the BSKKS had threatened to go on a strike from April 7. However, the same was postponed following the assurances made by the BEST management. In January, the BEST union went on a nine-day successful strike against the administration under the leadership of Shashank Rao.
Prior to the negotiations, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had conducted a meeting with BSKKS and BEST Corporation where the civic body had agreed to allocate funds of around ₹780 crore to provide for the increased BEST employees' salary. However, the increase is said to be only 8-10 per cent of the employees' salary. Therefore, they have turned down the offer by BEST and BMC.
