Two more Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) conductors have tested positive for coronavirus, taking the tally of the number of cases from the local road transport wing to four. Three of the four conductors who tested positive were posted at Goregaon bus depot.
BEST chief medical officer Dr Anil Kumar Singhal told TOI, "Only one conductor was infected while at work. In the other three cases, patients got the infection from family members or when they were out of Mumbai."
Meanwhile, one of the conductors who recently tested positive has a daughter who is a nurse and had tested positive earlier. As per the reports, the conductor had contracted the virus from her. On the other hand, the other conductor had gone to his native village and had met his son. The son reportedly had viral fever and when the conductor returned to Mumbai, he also developed a fever.
After the conductors tested positive, BEST undertaking on Thursday put 15 employees at the Goregaon bus depot in quarantine. According to reports, the conductor used to stay in the restroom while on duty. While the restroom has not been sealed, it has been sanitised and has been left open for use again.
Following his diagnosis, he has been moved to the Trauma hospital in Jogeshwari whereas the 15 staffers have been moved to a private hotel at Ram Mandir for the quarantine period.
Prior to this, an employee from BEST's electric wing had tested positive and now, two conductors have been detected with the virus. This has once again raised the question of the employees' safety.
Currently, BEST is the only public transport service that is plying essential employees in Mumbai.
