Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has urged Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal to start special trains for the stranded migrant workers and labourers in the state. Pawar wrote a letter to the Union Minister demanding the government to run special trains from Mumbai and Pune for the migrant workers to go to their native states after the nationwide lockdown ends on May 3.

In a statement, Pawar said that there might be a law and order problem as the migrant workers and labourers who are stranded in various parts of Maharashtra may step out in large numbers to go to their respective states after the lockdown is lifted. The railway ministry should run special trains to avoid the same, he added.

Over 6.5 lakh migrant workers and labourers are currently staying across the shelters provided by the Maharashtra government, Ajit Pawar said while adding that the state government has arranged accommodation and food for the stranded migrant workers from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and other states.

Pawar also mentioned the crowd gathering near Bandra West railway station which happened on April 14 and said that this shows how desperate they are to go home.

Earlier, the Deputy Chief Minister expressed concerns over the reports of frontline workers including doctors, nurses, policemen and journalists getting infected by the coronavirus or COVID-19 while urging those discharging their duty to take care of their health.

In the view of the increasing cases for the coronavirus, Pawar also said that Muslims should offer namaz during Ramzan from their homes and not in mosques or any other public place.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Public Health Minister Rajesh Tope has informed that the number of hot spots in Maharashtra has been reduced to five from 14. Tope further asked people to not panic over the projections made by the central team suggesting that the COVID-19 cases in Mumbai will rise up to 42,604 by April 30.

As the central team projects a massive hike in COVID-19 cases in Mumbai, the Maharashtra government has contested the methodology and tools used for the latest projection and gap analysis.
