Central Railway (CR) has installed Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras with in-built face recognition system at Byculla station on Tuesday, October 10, to enhance security at Mumbai suburban network. It has been installed with the help of Nirbhaya Fund.

Masjid, Chinchpokli and Curry Road stations will be covered in next 20 days.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Dadar, Kurla, Thane, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Kalyan stations will be excluded where there is an integrated security system. Other stations with older CCTV technology, will be replaced under this initiative.

So far, this system has been installed at 756 railway stations. The project is part of a larger plan, which aims to install 6122 cameras at 364 stations under CR's jurisdiction.

CR will install state-of-the-art CCTVs at 76 suburban stations at a cost of INR 150-200 crore in the next two years.

"A total of 2,509 hi-tech CCTV cameras will be installed at 76 stations in phases. Of these, 297 will be equipped with facial recognition system,” said a CR official.

Each station will get four to 10 cameras with facial recognition system. Apart from the platform, these cameras will also be installed in the waiting hall, reservation counter, parking area, main entrance, foot over bridge and booking office. They will be connected through an optical fiber cable.

According to CR, the new cameras not only have wider coverage but also offer better clarity than the current cameras. It has 180 degrees of rotation for wider coverage. Even if you cover your face with a cloth, this system can detect it.

“This will act as a deterrent to potential miscreants, enhance surveillance and ensure safe travel. Improved features include video analytics and video management system, while pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras will eliminate blind spots,” said another official.
