Mumbaikars will now soon be able to enjoy the hotel on wheels theme, as Central Railway is coming up with this concept soon.

The Central Railway Administration has finalised the plan to set-up dining amenity in train coach at the entrance of CSMT near Carnac bunder. A discarded coach will be allotted through open tender to set up a Restaurant On Wheel that will most likely become landmark eating house place in South Mumbai.

According to reports, the unused railway coaches will be converted into restaurants and various food items will be made available there.

Although there are stalls at CSMT, Dadar, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, where Mail-Express departs from Central Railway, there is no small restaurant where you can sit and enjoy food. Hence, the decision was taken. Two years ago, the railway board had asked Zonal railways to start theme eateries by refurbishing old coaches. CR will reportedly gain INR 28 lakhs by starting this theme.

CSMT’s side entrance P D’mello has been selected owing to its ample space apt for accommodation. It will have a seating capacity of 50 people. The coach, the track and the draining system will be provided by CR.

The restaurant operator can also use the space by placing some chairs and tables in the open space outside the train car. The place also offers great parking plots.

Madhya Pradesh Railway Tourism Corporation has also started a Rail Coach Restaurant facility and it is getting a good response. The restaurant on wheel concept has also been implemented in the Asansol section of the railways. It was inaugurated in February 2020.
