Dadar station, one of Mumbai’s busiest stations connecting the Western and Central Railway lines is set for a major transformation. Work has begun to link Platforms 1, 2, and 3 with a new Foot Over Bridge (FOB). Plans are also underway to build a new platform on the eastern side for long-distance trains.
Sources in Western Railway said that infrastructure development is also in progress at Prabhadevi station. The FOB at Prabhadevi is located on the southern side of the station, and it was recently extended up to the Central Railway’s Parel end.
“After temporary changes were made in the halt points of local trains, trains started stopping two coaches ahead of their usual spot. This increased crowd movement and put additional load on the FOB.”
At Dadar station, the railway administration will also construct a new Platform No. 8. This decision aims to ease congestion at Mumbai Central and Bandra Terminus due to increasing train traffic. The proposal is part of the 5th and 6th line extension under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project.
“We are attempting to complete this work before the next monsoon. This will significantly enhance Dadar’s handling capacity,” another official said.
Currently, Dadar has only two terminus lines, from which nine train services operate. However, once the 6th line is extended up to Mahim and if more route adjustments are required in the future one of the Dadar terminus lines may need to be discontinued.
The construction of Platform No. 8 will greatly improve the operational efficiency of Dadar station. This platform will be built on the eastern side of Platform 7 and connected directly to the stabling line. New OHE fittings, a signalling system, and crossover points will be developed for this purpose.
Additionally, the 6th line will be extended southwards. This will require technical modifications to signals, tracks, and OHE cables.
During construction, the wall of the Dadar Railway Colony, a portion of the southern FOB, and the FOB itself will be demolished and rebuilt. Once Platform No. 8 is ready, not only will trains run more punctually, but the overall efficiency of the entire station will increase significantly.
