While officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) previously said that the trial runs for the much-awaited Metro 2A and Metro 7 will commence by the end of May, we now have a precise date.

Authorities confirmed that the first trials will start on May 31 and that the overhead electrical equipment (OHE) has been energized to allow the movement of a prototype train on the new tracks.

The first mainline trial is scheduled on the Up line from the depot at Charkop. As mentioned previously, a team from BEML will also be present during the trials given that it supplied the necessary coaches for the project.

This initial prototype testing phase will go on for a period of two months following which the prototype rake will be sent to the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) for mandatory safety and performance testing for another two months.

Although the MMRDA initially set a target of beginning services on these lines by December 2020, the coronavirus pandemic completely upended those plans. The Metro 2A (Dahisar - DN Nagar) line stretches 17.5 km long while Metro 7 (Dahisar East - Andheri East) is 18.6 km long.

Authorities have previously said that the metro lines should be ready for commercial operations in a phased manner by October 2021. The first trip is expected to take place between Aarey and Kamraj Nagar via Dahisar on both lines.

These BEML-made Metro cars will run on 25KV AC traction power and come equipped with CCTV cameras for surveillance and security. Commuters will be able to carry bicycles within these stainless steel coaches that have an overall capacity of 2,280 passengers in a six-car Metro train set.

The full stretch of Metro 2A and Metro 7 will reportedly be ready for trial and testing by December 2021 while the deadline to commission the entire stretch is January 1, 2022.
