The passengers have been gradually increasing in the local trains of Mumbai with the relaxation in the lockdown norms in the state as a part of the “Mission Begin Again” initiative.

After three months of strict lockdown, the local services were resumed for people engaged in essential services. According to sources, before the lockdown, 1,200 people could travel easily in a Mumbai local but now as per state norms, only 600-700 people are allowed on each train. To avoid overcrowding during rush hours and to ensure that all social distancing norms are met, the frequency of trains on Central Railways has been increased. During these times, there is a CR train usually in every five to six minutes.

Earlier, the Western Railways and the Central Railways announced that the JEE and NEET aspirants will be permitted to use the special train services with parents or guardians on the day of the examinations in order to travel to their respective exam centres. For such special occasions, Mumbai Locals run special trains to make sure that people can travel conveniently.

Talking to Mumbai Live, CR spokesperson said, "There are currently 355 local trains that are running in Mumbai. Every train can carry 600 to 700 people as per the guidelines that have laid out. We are well equipped to handle the current passenger load. However, for special occasions and needs, we add special trains from time to time".

Additionally, the station and security officials at the stations had been instructed to permit the students on the exam days after checking the admit cards, which were to act as documentation to allow students to use the suburban railways. As of now, the local trains are plying with restricted access for essential workers only. Therefore, with the decision to conduct these examinations across the country, it is only convenient for the students to travel in the local trains.
