Uday Samant, State Minister for Higher and technical education, on Saturday, stated that holding examinations before September 30 was not feasible.

This came a day after the Supreme Court stated that the final-year students cannot be given their degrees without examinations, however, stating that the extension of the dates can depend on the states.

A three-judge bench of Supreme Court which comprised of Justices Ashok Bhushan, R Subhash Reddy and MR Shah pronounced the verdict when faced with pleas challenging UGC's directive to conduct final year university exams by September-end in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak.

The apex court, providing major relief to the students, stated that the deadline set by UGC can be changed by the state but the states cannot promote the students without taking examinations. The court further in its statement added that the Maharashtra government's decision to postpone exams under the Disaster Management Act shall remain in its place.

Samant further said that the state will respect the order by the SC adding that it will also keep in mind the health issues of the students, and the pandemic along with it so that nothing is comprised on. Moreover, he said that the committee headed by Mumbai University’s vice-chancellor Dr Suhas Pednekar will submit its report by Monday afternoon which will state the rough timelines for the final-year examinations.

Furthermore, the minister said that examinations will be held in the simplest way and without summoning students to the exam halls. The state government is also said to be checking the option of online examinations. Conducting the examinations at exam centres was not possible in view of the coronavirus outbreak as many colleges, hostels are being used as quarantine centres, Samant said in conclusion.
