Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport's (BEST) fleet of electric buses will be increased six times in 2022 considering orders for 2,100 such additional buses are set to be placed in January 2022, reports stated. With this, it inches closer to its target of electrifying 50 per cent of its complete fleet.
According to reports, BEST will acquire 1,400 "bigger" single decker AC electric buses that is 12 meters in length. This can be contrasted to the 9 meters Midi and 7 meters Mini buses. It is anticipated that this initiative will augment the carrying capacity of office travellers and curtail the wait time at stops.
Based on accounts these 12-meter buses will be put on longer routes as well as on arterial routes in addition to being on office-going routes during peak hours, mentioned BEST General Manager Lokesh Chandra.
A narrative by the Times of India quoted Chandra elaborating on how there are enough smaller buses that can traverse though lanes and bylanes of Mumbai. Therefore, now they wish to emphasis on expediting journeys for office travellers and look to ferry maximum passengers in a single ride.
Apart from this, other buses anticipated to be ordered in early 2022 include 400 AC electric Midis, 100 AC electric Minis and 200 AC electric double deckers.
