In the past two days, the Government Railway Police (GRP) has penalised 101 people for roaming without masks within the railway premises in the city.

On Tuesday (November 4), the GRP officers commenced a drive to ensure the safety of commuters using local train services. According to the officers, they have already collected INR 29,200 as fine. An officer claimed this drive as the need of the hour considering people’s negligence in wearing masks during the pandemic.

On the same day, GRP had penalised 35 people across the three railway lines in the city and collected a fine of INR 10,000.

On Wednesday, the police caught 66 passengers and fined them INR 19,200 with the maximum number of people being penalised at Chhtrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).

Twenty-five passengers were fined on each day. Any person commuting without a mask will have to pay a fine of INR 200.

The second station where the maximum number of commuters were fined was Thane, followed by Kurla. Officers said that since the railways have started to allow women commuters along with essential workers, the concern for safety owing to COVID-19 infection has increased and hence, the drive will continue.
