Railways will implement new fares from July 1, 2025. The increased rates will be for long-distance and AC trains. There will be no increase in the fares of local i.e. suburban trains. At the same time, there will be no impact on the monthly pass. The Monthly Season Ticket (MST) will be available at the old rate. Due to this, some categories have also received relief.

As per the new rates, there will be no change in the ordinary second class fare up to 500 km. However, for distances beyond 500 km, there will be an increase of half a paisa per kilometre. Similarly, there will be an increase of 1 paisa per kilometre in mail/express (non-AC) trains.

A few days ago, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had said that the fares of different classes in different trains are based on the facilities provided in them. Different train services are provided for different types of passenger classes.

In response to a question in Parliament, Vaishnav had said that Indian Railways determine fares by considering the cost of travel, passenger carrying capacity, competition with other competing modes of transport, socio-economic aspects, etc.
