Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, on Tuesday, June 8, 2021, inaugurated country’s first CNG Mobile Refuelling Unit (MRU) which has been developed together by Indraprastha Gas (IGL) and Mahanagar Gas.

The event was held online due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic whereby a total of 201 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations were inaugurated across India. Sharing his thought regarding the same, Minister Pradhan said that this initiative will help in 'bringing in innovation in energy retailing.'

The new effort is focused on making sure fuel is delivered at the doorsteps thereby emphasising on the benefits of mobile fuel retailing. Experts state that this could help several consumers in India as the services have lower cost and can be made available at several locations shopping malls, offices, etc.

Minister Pradhan further mentioned that the efforts will ensure CNG is available in areas that do not have pipeline connectivity or sufficient land to develop CNG stations. Sharing more, the Director of Commercials at IGL, Amit Garg, confirmed that the MRU has a total of 55 lightweight Type IV Cylinders with a storage capacity of 1,500 kg CNG, sufficient enough to service 150-200 vehicles per day.

The prototype for the same was showcased in January 2021, and after consulting with several stakeholders, the model was developed by IGL and later approved by PESO. Experts believe that the benefits and demands of the MRU will increase over the years across several areas and the firms will work towards making it operational efficiently.
