For the last couple of weeks, citizens have been demanding for the suburban railway system to be made available for the general public. In recent developments, even the Bombay High Court had asked the Maharashtra government about the same.

In order to provide a response in view of the situation, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has stated that the Mumbai locals will not be made available to all immediately. Moreover, the CM said that he wants the timings of private offices altered to facilitate shifts to avoid crowding of workplaces and transport.

On Monday, August 2, in Sangli, he said “Allowing all on the local trains is difficult in this phase. We will relax curbs in phases and review the impact before taking any further decision [about suburban trains.”

In the past, the Bombay High Court had also asked the government to prepare a comprehensive plan for the same. Questions were raised by the division bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Girish Kulkarni asking for reasons why fully vaccinated citizens cannot commute on the Mumbai local trains. While hearing a PIL, the bench said that while the public is allowed to travel on the buses, why not on the train as there was no point in being vaccinated and not being allowed to commute.
