According to the latest reports, fatal road crashes in Maharashtra increased by 5 per cent and deaths by 4 per cent in 2021 in contrast to 2019. More than 12,300 fatal crashes were reported throughout the state in 2021 in which over 13,300 people succumbed, highlighted data with Maharashtra traffic department. 

Based on accounts, Nashik and Pune were at worst when it came to fatalities. In Mumbai, however, deaths fell by 36 per cent to 288 in 2021 from 447 in 2019. It was mentioned in narratives that transport experts elaborated that the network of highways through semi-urban areas while has enhanced connectivity has made it a hotspot for crashes. 

More than 29,000 road crashes were reported in the state in 2021. It has also been reported that India has set a target of a 50 per cent fall in road crashes deaths by 2030. 

On the other hand, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), in Mumbai from the 1,681 road accident fatalities between 2017 and 2020, more than 17.5 per cent were hit-and-run deaths. Additionally, in 2020, 132 hit-and-run accidents were reported Mumbai according to the data, with the number of other road accidents being 204. Based on the report, pedestrians count for 47 per cent of the deaths on roads in Mumbai, whilst bikers entail 41 per cent.
