As the diesel prices witnesses a record high in the state, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) on Monday, October 25, hiked fares for all types of bus services.

The new fares, which came into effect on October 25 midnight, increased ticket prices by a minimum of INR 5, according to MSRTC.

For the first time in the last three years, the ST Corporation has decided to increase the fare by 17.17 per cent. The fare hike will be applicable to all types of passenger transport services of the corporation.

“We have decided to hike fares by around 17.17 per cent mainly due to rise in diesel prices. MSRTC is revising its bus fare after a gap of three years,” said an official.

In an official statement MSRTC mentioned that the travel in AC 'Shivneri' buses between Mumbai's Dadar and Swargate in Pune now costs INR 525 instead of INR 450.

However, ticket rates of night express buses have been reduced by INR 5 to INR 10, the release said.

The corporation also hiked the dearness allowance (DA) of its employees to 17 per cent from the existing 12 per cent ahead of Diwali.

The transport body, which has been severely hit due to curtailed operations amid the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown, is expected to earn an additional INR 50 crores from this move, Shekhar Channe, vice chairman and managing director of the state-run transport undertaking, told PTI.

It also said the October salary of employees will be paid before the Diwali festival on November 1 instead of the scheduled 7th day of each month.

MSRTC has a staff strength of 95,000 employees and a fleet of 16,000 buses.
