Maharashtra’s traffic police have put into force the state government’s order on the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019, rising compounding penalties for various traffic offences that included a larger fine for repeated offenders, from 12 am on Sunday, December 12, reported the Indian Express.

The sudden surge in the revised fines depicts a rise in the aggregate fine gathered by the traffic police for violations of road safety. According to the data from the Highway Safety Patrol (HSP), on Sunday and Monday, across Maharashtra, the traffic police issued 57,977 e-challans to motorists collecting fines that are aggregately worth INR 4.51 crore, highlighted narratives.

Prior to the increase of fines, the traffic police on Friday and Saturday had issued 1.09 lakh e-challans which enabled them to collect fines worth INR 4.32 crore. Based on accounts, pending e-challans in Maharashtra since its implementation in January 2019 is an estimated INR 1,175 crore.

Based on the amended act, if one is found travelling on two-wheelers without a helmet, the fine has been increased to INR 500 for the first time and INR 1,500 for the second and subsequent times. On the other hand, the fine for talking on the mobile phone while driving has also increased from INR 200 to INR 500.
