On Thursday, December 2, the Maharashtra government amended the Motor Vehicle Act (MVA). They have increased fines across the state for different traffic offences. The amendment act has come into effect from Wednesday, December 1.

If an individual is found travelling on two-wheelers without a helmet has increased from ₹500 to ₹500 for the first time and ₹1,500 for the second and subsequent times. The fine for talking on the mobile phone while driving has also increased from ₹200 to ₹500.

A senior from transport department official said the fines are increased to prevent people from committing traffic offences. They will drive safely, which will improve the road safety of the driver and the pedestrians as well.

Meanwhile, the compounding fines in different sections of the MV Act have been altered. For dangerous (reckless) driving fine was ₹1,000, while it has now been revised to ₹1,000 for two-wheelers and ₹2,000 for other vehicles.

On similar lines, the fine for a fancy number plate was ₹1,000, and now the revised penalty is ₹500 for the first time. A fine of ₹1,500 will be imposed for subsequent instances.
