In an attempt to curtail cases of speeding and reduce the number of fatalities on the road, the Maharashtra transport department seeks to acquire 76 additional interceptor vehicles that assist in catching drivers who are flouting road safety regulations, said Avinash Dhakne, transport commissioner, reported the Times of India.

According to the account, with the new purchase, the aggregate number of such vehicles in the state will rise to more than 150. Interceptors come equipped with speed gun cameras that can simultaneously capture many vehicles. These new gadgets are slated to be put across roads in MumbaiPuneNagpur and Nashik

Based on the narratives, in Mumbai's eastern suburbs, officials from the RTO initiated a drive last weekend by means of interceptors wherein videos of flouters were captured and challans were sent online.

Dhakne was quoted in the report elaborating on how the aim is to reduce the number of fatalities across Maharashtra by 50 per cent in five years. He added that 58 black spots have been identified in Mumbai which has had the highest mishaps in the last few years. Herein, surprise checks will be done.

Meanwhile, narratives suggest that from a total of 19,383 accidents that occurred in Maharashtra, 5,333 fatalities and 9,120 people were injured between January to April. In this, Mumbai topped the numbers with 8,768 accidents.
