In a significant development, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Vile Parle, will soon be connected to the upcoming Navi Mumbai airport in Ulwe via the metro.

The Airport Express Line will be 35 km long, with a daily ridership of 9 lakh passengers and will be built at an estimated cost of INR 15,000 crore.

Two development agencies, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) will be working on the project.

MMRDA, will build metro line 8 from Mumbai Airport (CSMIA) to Mankhurd (11.1 km) through Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) will be extending the line from Mankhurd to Navi Mumbai airport.

According to officials, this metro line will be partially underground on the Mumbai side. The line is likely to be built underground from Andheri to Eastern Express Highway at Ghatkopar. From Ghatkopar to Mankhurd it will be elevated via the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd link road.

There is no mass rapid transport system (MRTS) between this airport and the international airport in Mumbai.

For those unversed, the metro for Navi Mumbai airport has been on MMRDA’s master plan since 2014. Considering the increasing traffic between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai after the operationalisation of Navi Mumbai Airport, Metro 8 route was proposed. Due to this route, the distance from Mumbai Airport to Navi Mumbai Airport can be covered in just 30 minutes with only 7 stations.

Commercial operations from Navi Mumbai airport are likely to start from 2025.
