Soon Commuters can travel to Navi Mumbai Airport From Mumbai Airport in just 30 minutes

The distance between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and Navi Mumbai Airport will be covered in just 30 minutes instead of two hours in near future. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and CIDCO have initiated activities for the construction of Mumbai Airport to Navi Mumbai Airport Metro 8 line. A project management consultant will soon be appointed by MMRDA and CIDCO for the work on this stretch of approximately 32 km.

According to MMRDA’s comprehensive transport report, it has proposed the Mumbai Airport to Navi Mumbai Airport metro route as Metro 8 in its 337 km metro project. Considering the increasing traffic between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai after the operationalisation of Navi Mumbai Airport, Metro 8 route from Mumbai Airport to Navi Mumbai Airport has been proposed. But so far no concrete steps have been taken to pave the way. But CIDCO and MMRDA have started activities to build this route.

The MMRDA will construct the Mumbai phase of this route of approximately 32 km while CIDCO will construct the phase in the Navi Mumbai area. Accordingly, the MMRDA prepared a detailed project plan for the 10.1 km phase of Metro 8 from Mumbai Airport to Mankhurd through Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. CIDCO Managing Director Sanjay Mukherjee told Loksatta that CIDCO has appointed Urban Mass Transit Company for the design of Mankhurd to Navi Mumbai Airport phase. This plan is likely to be completed in the next five months. CIDCO will immediately appoint a project management consultant for the work of this route. 

The MMRDA is likely to appoint a Project Management Consultant by the end of December. All in all, there is a possibility that the Metro 8 route will be opened soon. The first phase of Navi Mumbai Airport is likely to be operational in December 2024. In line with this, CIDCO has speeded up the movement to lay Metro 8 route. If this route becomes operational, the distance between Mumbai Airport and Navi Mumbai Airport will be reduced.

This is how will be the Metro 8 route

• Mumbai Airport to Navi Mumbai Airport Metro 8 route is approximately 32 km
  
  
• Underground metro line between Andheri to Ghatkopar; Later the route will be elevated between Ghatkopar to Mankhurd and beyond
  
  
• The route from Mankhurd to Navi Mumbai Airport will be parallel to Palm Beach
  
  
• This will be a direct route from Navi Mumbai Airport Terminal Building to Mumbai Airport Building
  
  
• Due to this route, the distance from Mumbai Airport to Navi Mumbai Airport can be covered in just 30 minutes
  
  
• Metro will pass through Vashi Bay; For this, there will be a two-km bridge over the creek
  
  
• The route will cover seven metro stations
  
  
• Possibility of metro running at a frequency of 20 minutes and at a speed of 80-90 per km
