Thane district is set to receive another metro service this year, as construction work on Mumbai Metro Line 5 is almost complete. The project is being carried out by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
Metro Line 5 will connect Thane, Bhiwandi, and Kalyan and has a total length of about 25 kilometres. The project is being developed in phases. The first phase, which runs from Kapurbawdi in Thane to Dhamankar Naka in Bhiwandi, is nearly finished.
Civil construction on this stretch is around 95 percent complete. This section will have seven stations: Kapurbawdi, Balkum Naka, Kasheli, Kalher, Purna, Anjurphata, and Dhamankar Naka. Work related to signalling, electrification, and safety checks will be carried out next.
MMRDA plans to begin trial runs and complete necessary approvals soon, with the aim of opening this metro line later this year. Once operational, Metro Line 5 will become the third metro line serving Thane district.
The new metro route is expected to greatly improve travel between Thane, Bhiwandi, and nearby areas. It will reduce road traffic congestion and make daily commuting faster and more comfortable for residents.
