Retired Civil Engineer, and commonly known as the Metro Man of India, Elattuvalappil Sreedharan slammed Modi government and said that “Bullet train is for the elites and is beyond the reach of the commoners.”

Recently, Sreedharan was appointed to standardise the metro system across the country and his remarks on the bullet train project are contrary to that of the government.

The Metro Man asserted that India needs a more safe and fast railways system and not a bullet train which will cater only to a few. As compared to the developed countries, India’s railway system is primitive and behind by almost 20 years, he added.

Commenting on the conditions of Indian Railways, Sreedharan informed that punctuality of the train is worse and it lacks progress. Railway accidents are not reduced and nearly 2,000 lives are lost on the tracks annually, he added.

Defying government claims of technical enhancement in railways, the retired civil engineer said that there has been no improvement apart from the bio-toilets being installed in the trains. Even the speed of the most prestigious trains has not increased. In fact, it has come down.

In Maharashtra, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Shiv Sena are strongly and aggressively protesting against the bullet train project proposed by the government, with their own reasons to oppose. Also, the farmers in South Gujarat and Maharashtra are also protesting against land acquisition for this project.
