In an announcement made on Saturday, August 29, 2020, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has given permission for the metro rail to resume services from September 7, 2020. The decision was passed under Unlock 4.0 guidelines issued by the ministry.

The statement issued by the ministry said that the Metro rails will be allowed to operate in a graded manner by the respective ministries and departments, in consultation with MHA. Further, guidelines and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) will be issued by officials and will have to be followed strictly by the respective states.

Mumbai Metro authorities took to Twitter to share the news that services in Mumbai will also resume as per the guidelines issued by MHA. The message said, "As we eagerly await welcoming aboard our valued commuters, we wish to inform that #MumbaiMetroOne shall be resuming services as per the guidelines from relevant authorities. Please follow this space for updates."

Reports also suggest that Mumbai local train services may resume from September 2020, and guidelines will be issued with regards to the same. To ensure safety and encourage social distancing, officials are planning to install QR-code based entry at the stations. The plan will begin as a pilot project at Mumbai's Churchgate and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.

Meanwhile, CM Uddhav Thackeray also met the gym owners with regards to resuming services in Mumbai, and as per the meeting, the ministry is positive about reopening gyms with strict guidelines.

As of August 28, 2020, Maharashtra had more than 7,00,000 cases and still continues to be one of the most affected states in India. While the number of cases in Mumbai have reduced, other divisions in the state have seen an increase in the cases.
