With the further relaxations in lockdown norms, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has been anticipating the resumption of the monorail services.

The MMRDA is to soon appoint an agency to take the work of sanitization forward. According to mid-day, tenders have also been invited for the deployment of sniffer dogs. As per officials, the MMRDA has tendered for the appointment of an agency that will provide them with 20 sniffer dogs for 17 monorail stations and one depot.

However, even though MMRDA has not spoken about the particular breed of the sniffer canines, the agency that bags the deal will have to provide for 20 sniffer dog squad each with one professional handler, 2 kennel unit handlers (12-hour shift), and 2 supervisors (12-hour shift) for a period of 24 months.

On the other hand, the maintenance and repair work by the MMRDA for the monorails is on full swing. The monorail services have been shut for months due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown.

The Maharashtra government is already under pressure from the general passengers to allow them to use the Mumbai Local train services. Currently, the local trains only operate to ferry employees working in the essential sectors recognised by the state government. Therefore, it can only be anticipated that as the state decides to resume the locals in Mumbai for regular passengers, the monorail services would be resumed as well.
