The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is upgrading the services of the monorail on the Chembur-Wadala-Jacob Circle route in the country's financial capital. With the addition of one rake to its fleet, monorail services will increase from 118 to 142 on weekdays. The monorail will run at a speed of only 15 minutes on weekdays instead of the previous 18 minutes, with an increase of 24 services to 142 journeys.


This is the first monorail system in the country. The first phase of the 8.26 km long Chembur–Wadala route was commissioned in February 2014, while the remaining portion of the 11.28 km long Wadala–Jacob Circle was opened to the public in March 2019.

There are seven stations on the Chembur-Wadala route. The names of these stations are Wadala Depot, Mysore Colony, Bhakti Park, Bharat Petroleum, V.N. Purva Marg, Fertilizer Colony and Chembur. There are 11 stations on the Wadala-Jacob Circle route. The names of these stations are Chinchpokli, Chembur Naka, Wadala Bridge, Mint Colony, Acharya Atre Nagar, Antop Hill, Wadala, GTB Nagar, Fertilizer Company and Bharat Petroleum.


The design speed of Mumbai Monorail is 80 km per hour while the rated speed is 31 km per hour. The operating timings of the monorail are from 05:00 to 24:00. The monorail has proven to be an efficient feeder transit system in Mumbai, benefiting commuters and providing safe, air-conditioned, comfortable and affordable public transport. It carries over 7000 passengers per hour in each direction. It also has the capacity to carry about 2 lakh passengers per day
