The Railways has decided to set up a Mobile Train Radio Communication system which is to notify the passengers about any obstacles while operating the Mumbai locals, especially during the monsoons.

Moreover, the system will also be linked to the railway management room which handles the local services keeping the local schedule smooth. According to sources, this system is currently being tested on the Western Railways.

Motormen are not allowed to talk on mobiles while driving a local. Currently, the motormen have a 'Public Address' (PA) system in order for the guards to communicate with each other in a running local. This system is not up to date and is not connected to the Railway Management Center. The list of guards in case of emergency includes train station master, railway control room telephones as well as other mobile phones.

Due to a large amount of stagnant water on the tracks during the rainy season, the schedule of the locals is often disrupted. Passengers do not even get accurate information on whether the local trains will continue after stopping at the spot due to which the abovementioned decision is taken to set up a communication system.

The system is touted to operate in the guard, motorman's cabin as well as in the management room, according to Western Railways. In case of an emergency, motormen and guards can directly contact the control room, local control department, section controller or the railway police. They will also be able to contact various departments and provide accurate information to the passengers when required informed Sumit Thakur, Chief Public Relations Officer, Western Railway.
