The Government of Maharashtra has eased restrictions on travellers coming into the city as part of its unlocking strategy that originally started towards the end of May. Now, data provided by the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) is giving us the full picture of the number of arrivals and departures in the city.

The data shows that around 2,37,200 passengers arrived at CSMIA since Unlock 3.0 was announced in August, while 1,70,600 people left the city in the same timeframe. In comparison, Mumbai saw 1,08,500 arrivals and 1,62,800 departures during Unlock 2.0 in July. Separately, the Mumbai airport was officially allowed to ramp up daily flights from 100 per day in August to 200 per day as of now.

The data further shows that the number of passengers arriving in the city nearly doubled in the month of August in comparison to July. “When domestic flight operations initially resumed on May 25, CSMIA had observed more passengers departing and travelling back to their hometowns. With the rising trend of business travel as the purpose of flying, the airport has observed growth in arriving passengers since August 1,” an airport operator at Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) said.

CSMIA has made several improvements to its infrastructure since the pandemic began while it also became the first Indian airport to receive ACI Health Accreditation recently. The airport has an RT-PCR testing facility, which will be used to test incoming passengers that are symptomatic and do not possess a COVID-19 negative test certificate.
