The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has demanded the Maharashtra government to provide compensation worth ₹1 crore to the families of police personnel who have died due to the coronavirus while discharging their duty. 

Maharashtra is the ground zero for COVID-19 pandemic in India and has reported  9,67,349 cases till date. Meanwhile, the active cases in the state are 2,43,809 and the death toll remains 27,287. 

“The COVID-19 pandemic has not just overwhelmed institutions but has stretched state capacity, already grappling with 'misgovernance', to its limits. We should be proud of our police force, who have been tirelessly working, to ensure the levers of the economy and the administration continue to turn, often beyond the call of duty,” the AAP said in a statement. 

The AAP in Maharashtra has demanded a sum of ₹1 crore for the families of those who have fallen to COVID-19 in their line of duty. Earlier, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had announced ex-gratia worth ₹1 crore for Delhi Police constable who succumbed to COVID-19. 

“We owe it to them and their families to honour their supreme sacrifice. No amount of monetary compensation can compensate their irreparable loss but we demand that a sum of ₹1 crore, be given to the next of kin of those who fall to COVID in their line of duty, following Delhi's Kejriwal Govt's provision for the same” Preeti Menon said. 

Maharashtra Police has reported 533 fresh COVID-19 cases, and four police officials have died due to the coronavirus in the last 24 hours. The coronavirus has infected nearly 17,972 police personnel, and 180 have died till date. The active cases in the state police are 3,523 while 14,269 police personnel have recovered.
