Amidst the worries faced by the commuters in the city, the State Transport (ST) department, on Monday, September 29, announced important news, which could bring relief for regular commuters.

In a recently taken decision, officials at the ST Corporation have planned to resume the smart card registration for travellers, which will allow them to ease their schedule, on a daily basis. This service was stopped temporarily due to the coronavirus lockdown, however, considering the increasing number of passengers, officials have taken the decision to resume registrations.

Millions of passengers have been registering for smart card discounts on ST travel tickets, and currently, the services are expected to run at full capacity both within the city and for the inter-district transport. Travellers are also slowly increasing and as a result, all the work related to smart card i.e. registration, renewal, recharge/top-up should be started immediately. Instructions for the same have been given by the corporation to all the departments.

Furthermore, the department has asked officials to ensure that there is no congestion at the smart card distribution centre, as the corporation has been directed to follow the rules given by the government to prevent COVID19 infection. At present, over three lakh smart cards have been distributed in the state.

Meanwhile, ST Corporation has entered into an agreement certain banks for smart cards. Officials have extended the deadline for getting a smart card until November 30, 2020, as travellers will be able to use discounts in the near future
